We all want to maintain healthy teeth and gums, but many of our patients may not think about what is going on below the gum line. When gum disease occurs, regular cleanings cannot fully restore your gums and teeth back to a healthy state. This is when your dentist will recommend receiving a deep cleaning.
What is a deep cleaning?
A deep cleaning is also called scaling and root planing. Scaling is a procedure that cleans underneath your gums and in the pockets of gum tissue in order to remove tartar. Root planing smoothes out the roots of areas where germs may be able to get in and thrive. The scaling and root planing process helps your gums heal and for the periodontal pockets to shrink. This procedure usually requires 2-4 visits to complete.
Although gum disease is not always 100% curable, it is easily treatable. Deep cleanings are an important part of treating gum disease and keeping it from causing more harm to your mouth. After your first treatment, regular visits to the dentist will be necessary to keep your gums healthy along with proper at-home hygiene.
