Cosmetic dentistry is one of the fastest growing areas of dentistry. Everyone has a desire to have a smile that is beautiful and helps to build their confidence. Within cosmetic dentistry, tooth whitening is the most requested procedure/treatment that we get at our practice in Rockville, MD

But, what if you could avoid staining your teeth to begin with, and didn’t need a teeth whitening system? You can; you just have to be careful about what you are eating. Additionally, being careful about what you eat is a great way to make sure your teeth stay bright after your tooth whitening system is complete.

While tooth enamel is the strongest part of our body, it is quite fragile and susceptible to staining. Your enamel is covered in microscopic ridges and valleys that can cause particles of dark foods and drinks to get stuck on your teeth, and cause staining to your enamel, which is usually translucent.

Three beverages that cause a lot of staining are coffee, tea, and cola. The reason that these three beverages cause staining is due to their acidic content and dark pigments. Due to the acid that they contain, they can actually cause your enamel to wear away and expose your root dentin, which will give your tooth a more yellow color. Even if your enamel is not wearing away, the dark pigments still have a tendency to get stuck in your enamel and cause your teeth to look darker.

In addition to the beverages listed below, there are many foods that can cause your teeth to stain. The foods that cause the most staining are ones that contain artificial coloring, like fruit juice, gummies, tomato sauce, and popsicles. Other foods that can cause discoloration are foods that contain a lot of acid like grapefruit, lemons, and other citric fruits.

Something to keep in mind when determining if a food will stain your teeth is: “If the food or beverage would stain a white shirt, it will more than likely stain your tooth enamel/teeth.”

Even if you avoid the aforementioned foods and beverages, you still need to maintain good brushing, flossing, and use of mouthwash. When buying these products, make sure that they contain fluoride to help rebuild your tooth enamel.
