The way you take care of your toothbrush is almost as important as the way you brush your teeth.

Proper care for your toothbrush is something we tend to overlook, but the next time you brush your teeth, be sure to remember these helpful tips:

When You Finish Brushing
After you brush your teeth, rinse off your toothbrush with water and allow it to air-dry. If you cover up your toothbrush, microorganisms may be able to grow on the brush because of the moisture. 

When to Replace Your Toothbrush
Every 3-4 months you should switch your brush to a new one. Your toothbrush begins to wear and may not be cleaning your teeth as effectively if you use the same one for long periods of time. If you notice bristles beginning to wear, replace the brush at that time, even if it is sooner than 3 months.

Who Can Use Your Toothbrush?
Never share your toothbrush. It is an easy way to spread germs and can increase your chances of an infection.

With Halloween coming up at the end of this month, families are preparing for the scariest day of the year. For dentists, Halloween is also pretty terrifying as well, just for different reasons. With Halloween comes candy, and with candy comes cavities.

This year, we want to help your children keep their teeth healthy and give you a couple of possible options to help make sure your kids do not come home with a year's worth of candy.

 

Use smaller trick-or-treat bags

You may notice this, but every year kids tend to carry around pillowcases to trick-or-treat with. To make sure your child does not bring home all that candy, buy them an appropriate sized Halloween bag or bucket. Stores will sell them with the rest of the Halloween items, this is a good way to limit how much candy your child brings home.

 

Split up the candy

After their night of trick-or-treating, you should make sure you create a smaller portion of candy for your child to have. Using small baggies, you can place a few pieces of candy in each so when your child wants some candy they are not eating too much.

Set the location

Another way to control the amount of candy is to limit your kids to a specific neighborhood or number of streets. This is also important for you as a parent if you are not going with your kids since you will want to know where they are.

When you grab a snack to eat, a savory treat to enjoy, or a drink to quench your thirst, do you think about the damage that it can do to your teeth? We are guessing that you probably don’t. However, you should always consider which foods and beverages will cause damage to your teeth and have adverse effects on both your oral and overall health.

 

Below, Dr. Samuels in Rockville, MD outlines five foods and beverages that can damage your teeth by promoting tooth decay and gum disease. Dr. Samuels is not implying that you eliminate these foods and beverages from your diet, but to make sure you’re taking proper care of your teeth after consumption.

1.) Hard Candy/Suckers:

 

Hard candy and suckers melt in your mouth over a duration of time. Due to this, sugar and syrup are slowly being released into your mouth over a long period of time. As these sugars are released, bacteria use them to create acid. If you bite into a sucker or hard candy, they can easily cause a dental emergency as well.

 

2.) Soda

Bacteria use sugar from foods and drinks to produce acids that attack your enamel. Sodas typically contain acid already and then help bacteria produce additional acid that attacks your tooth enamel. Unfortunately, sodas are typically caffeinated and will cause you to dehydrate and develop dry mouth. When your mouth is dry, sugars, acid, and bacteria can harm your teeth as saliva is not present to protect them.

 

3.) Coffee and Tea (if not made correctly)

 

If you do not add anything to your tea or coffee, they are not bad choices for a beverage to drink. However, when you start adding flavors, syrup, and sugars, you start to make these drinks dangerous for your teeth. Similar to soda, coffee and tea can be caffeinated and cause you to suffer from dry mouth.

 

4.) Chewy/Sticky Food

 

Do you enjoy indulging in those fruity candies? You know, Starbursts, Skittles, or Sweet Tarts? Due to the texture of these candies, they tend to stay on your teeth for long periods of time and cause damage. In addition to candies, dried fruits are typically chewy and will do damage to your teeth as well. Rinsing your mouth with water, brushing, and flossing will help to remove particles of chewy food from your teeth.

 

5.) Citric Fruits

 

The biggest drawback of soda is the acids that they introduce to your mouth. Similar to soda, citric fruits are chalk full of acid. Acids eat away at your enamel and make you more prone to developing cavities over time. Squeezing lemons or limes into your water might seem like an innocent habit, but it can actually ruin the health benefits of drinking water for your mouth. Always drink plain tap water.

4.) Prevent Dry Mouth

 

Saliva is the best natural defender against cavities in our mouth. Saliva helps to neutralize acids and keep your teeth clean. If you suffer from dry mouth (xerostomia), you will be more susceptible to developing cavities. To prevent dry mouth, drink more water, stay away from alcohol and caffeine, and try to breathe through your nose and not your mouth! Chewing sugar-free chewing gum will also stimulate your salivary glands.
