When you take a picture, or look at yourself in the mirror, do you desire to have whiter teeth? If so, you have probably gone to the store and picked up a brand of toothpaste that promised to whiten your teeth, right? But…how do whitening toothpastes work (if they work at all)?

No matter what kind of toothpaste you use, it will contain mild abrasives. These mild abrasives are what will cause the surface stains on your teeth to be removed through brushing. These surface stains are the ones that are caused by consuming things like coffee or using tobacco products. If a toothpaste is considered a ‘whitening toothpaste,’ it may also contain a chemical compound or a polishing agent that will provide additional whitening benefits.

Unfortunately, what whitening toothpaste lack is bleaching agent—peroxide. The lack of peroxide present in whitening toothpaste means that the toothpaste will not lighten stains that are deeper in your tooth than the surface. Some whitening toothpaste contains something called blue covarine. Blue covarine covers the surface of your teeth and makes them appear whiter right away. However, blue covarine does not actually make your teeth whiter.

If you are looking for a whitening toothpaste to use, always look for a product that contains a seal of approval from the American Dental Association or another dental organization. This seal shows that the toothpaste does what it says it will, and is healthy/safe for you.

If you are not fully satisfied by the whitening that a toothpaste can provide, ask your dentist or your dental hygienist about what other whitening products are available for you to use. These products include over-the-counter and professional systems from your dentist. Please note that, depending on why your teeth are stained, whitening products might have no effect on your teeth’s color.
