Do you know what sleep apnea is?
Before reading on, make sure to read out last blog post introducing both snoring sleep apnea.
As we learned, sleep apnea is a huge cause of snoring. Affecting millions of people, sleep apnea is more common than most people are aware of. Sleep apnea, while it causes snoring, is a dangerous disease that causes you to actually stop breathing throughout the night. For this reason, if you are a snorer, you should undergo a sleep study.
Sleep apnea presents itself in two types: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Central Sleep Apnea (CSA).
Below, Dr. Samuels examines both types:
OSA
OSA is the far more common form of sleep apnea. OSA is when your airway becomes physically blocked by fat, growths, or something else. When your airway becomes blocked, your brain does not receive as much blood flow and will trigger your body to wake up to improve breathing. When you wake up, you may let out a loud gasping or choking sound.
OSA symptoms:
- Frequent snoring
- Morning headaches
- Not feeling rested in the morning
- Excessive daytime drowsiness
What causes OSA?
- Old age
- Excessive fatty tissue
- Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
- Consuming alcohol
- Tobacco usage (smoking)
CSA
CSA, while far less common than OSA, is more serious than OSA. CSA is more of a psychological problem vs. a physical issue. CSA is caused when your brain “forgets” to send signals to your body to breathe.
CSA symptoms:
- Gasping for air upon waking up
- Fatigue
- Mood swings
- Issues for concentrating for long periods
What causes CSA?
- Obesity
- Cardiovascular health disorders
- Some prescription medications
- Dementia
Make sure to stay tuned to our next blog. In it, Dr. Samuels will evaluate what treatment methods are available to alleviate sleep apnea.
