You may be grinding your teeth at night if you wake up with a headache or an aching jaw. Or maybe your teeth are sensitive to food and drinks that are hot or cold?

Bruxism, also termed teeth grinding, is the excessive grinding of the teeth and/or clenching of the jaw.

There are two main types of bruxism:

Awake Bruxism

The symptoms of awake bruxism may possibly not exist at all on waking up, and then worsen over the day.

Sleep Bruxism

Signs and symptoms of sleep bruxism seem to be worse upon waking and improve in the course of the course of the day.

Because stress is normally the primary reason for teeth grinding, we have put together a short list of ideas to help minimize stress.

1. Watch what you eat and drink right before you go to sleep; alcohol and caffeine may contribute to bruxism
2. Try not to clench your jaw or grit your teeth while you are awake
3. Have a healthy and well-balanced diet
4. Get on a regular sleep pattern
5. Relax prior to bed; try various strategies, such as listening to comforting songs
