The entire purpose of good oral hygiene (brushing, flossing, using mouthwash, and going to the dentist) is to keep your teeth clean and free of cavities and other diseases, like gum disease.
So, should good oral hygiene practices include brushing your tongue?
Yes, your oral hygiene should absolutely include brushing your tongue. For starters, if you are not brushing your tongue, you are missing a large area of your mouth where bacteria and germs can gather and create oral health issues. These health issues include tooth decay and gum disease. In addition to these issues, if you do not brush your tongue, you are not treating one of the leading causes of halitosis (bad breath). Unfortunately, many people don’t realize that their tongue can be the cause of their bad breath, and that brushing their tongue can eliminate bad breath.
What makes cleaning your tongue so important is the papillae that cover the its surface. These tiny projections that cover your tongue, offering germs and bacteria an area to “hide” and colonize as you brush. However, focusing on your tongue while brushing will eliminate the bacteria and germs from this area.
Below, Dr. Samuels offers a few additional tips to help you brush better and remove more bacteria and germs from your mouth.
- Tilt your brush at a 45 degree angle and brush away from your gum line.
- Lightly brush the surface of your gums in a circular motion, moving toward the surface of your teeth.
- Brush the roof of your mouth and your cheeks in a gentle manner.
- Use a product that contains fluoride to restore your enamel.
