Previously, we discussed two popular screening options for detecting oral cancer. Now, we would like to go over what some of the common signs are that may be related to oral cancer. It is important to remember that oral cancer is easily treatable when caught in the early stages.
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, over 42,000 people were expected to be diagnosed with oral cancer in 2017. The best way to detect oral cancer is through screenings, but there are some signs you should look for. Having one of these symptoms does not necessarily mean that you have oral cancer, but they should not be ignored or left untreated.
So what signs should you be aware of?
- Pain or soreness in your mouth, tongue, or lips
- Trouble with talking, chewing and eating
- An unexpected shift in your teeth
- Irritation in your mouth or throat that won’t subside
- Patches in your mouth that are red or white
If these symptoms do not go away after roughly two weeks, you should see your dentist immediately.
